JDS fields Panchaksharayya for Council polls

Mangalore, May 5: Janata Dal (Secular) has fielded C M Panchaksharayya as its candidate for the Karnataka State Legislative Council elections scheduled for June.

Addressing media persons in a press meet held in Mangalore on Saturday, Mr. Panchaksharayya said that he has been fielded as a candidate from the South West teachers' constituency.

Mr. Panchaksharayya said that he has served as the Secretary of the Padavedharara Sahakara Sangha, Shimoga, a body instituted for the welfare of teachers for 30 years. “I am aware of the problems of teachers and lecturers and I intend to be a voice for them in the State Legislative Council to air their grievances”, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, M G Hegde, State Secretary, JDS, said that Captain Ganesh Karnik who was elected as the MLC from the teachers' constituency had hardly served their purpose. “He was only busy with NRI activities and not a single programme for the welfare of teachers or education as a whole was formulated by him”, Mr. Hegde alleged.

The constituency comprises of Physical Education teachers, associate teachers, PU lecturers, and degree college lecturers.

D M Aslam, President, DK Minorities Unit, JDS, Shashiraj Shetty, District Chief Secretary, JDS, Azeez Malhar, Former Zilla Panchayat member, Hakam, JDS Youth leader, were also present in the press meet.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
