Manipal, May 12: Around 60 boys were being put through their paces in a cricket camp under two coaches deputed by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in Manipal, which boasts a turf wicket. The camp is being held under the banner of KSCA.

The summer camp began on April 19 and will continue till May 25. The ground at End Point where the camp was being held compared with the best in the country when the former cricketer Brajesh Patel inaugurated it two seasons ago.

The turf wicket in Manipal University was the only one anywhere in coastal Karnataka, as all others were matting wickets, said a release issued by the Manipal University here on Friday.

The turf wicket is a facility created for students and staff of the university and has been extended to budding cricketers of Udupi zone. The youngsters are out in the mornings and evening enjoying the lush green outfield and a beauty of a turf wicket. It is important for these youngsters as they do not know how a turf wicket feels. That is the reason why Manipal University extended the facility and allowed the camp to be held here.

At a function held here on May 10 to meet the youngsters and distribute caps, Pro Chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal said the facility was being opened to encourage budding talent in small centres and develop the game in the area. He exhorted the students to stay fit at all times.

Anand Venugopal of Manipal University and Srikanth Rai, president Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association and Convenor of KSCA, Mangalore Zone, were present at the function.
