Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Bhat said that the project which would pave the way for new horizons in the tourism industry in the region was still in planning stage and would require time to kick off.
“There are two aspects in this foot bridge project, one civil and the other mechanical. The civil part is being taken care of by NITK. We are looking at aspects such as making the structure earthquake and tsunami resistant and study is still being carried out in this regard. The mechanical part includes the rope design. We are seeking guidance from Engineer Girish Bharadwaj in this regard. The technology used in a foot bridge in Orissa besides other latest technologies are being studied before calling for the tender process”, Mr. Bhat said.
The MLA added that aspects such as boats being able to pass from beneath the bridge and the bearing capacity of the bridge are also being looked at.
The total length of the bridge would approximately be 400 meters. The proposed total width is 10 meters. When constructed, the bridge will be the longest hanging bridge in Karnataka.
Further, it will also reduce the distance of travel between Mangalore and Tannirbavi by about seven kilometres. It is not for vehicular traffic, however.
It can be recalled here that then Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa had laid the foundation for the hanging bridge at Sultan Battery in August, 2010.
