HDK gave colleges to state, not Shankarmurthy: Puttanna

Mangalore, May 21: BJP's MLC candidate D H Shankaramurthy has been publicizing everywhere as part of his election campaign that it was in his tenure as the education minister that Karnataka got 184 colleges but the truth is that it was the then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's initiative, said Puttanna, JDS leader.

Addressing media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Monday, Mr. Puttanna said that Mr. Shankarmurthy had not done anything significant as an elected representative from the Teachers Constituency. “His contribution is zero. He is campaigning for the polls saying that he has given 184 colleges to the state. The truth is that without the approval of the Chief Minister, it would not have been possible. JDS and H D Kumaraswamy, who was the Chief Minister then, deserve the credit for that development”, Mr. Puttanna said.

Stating that Mr. Kumaraswamy had also granted permissions to start a number of medical, engineering, nursing, and physiotherapy colleges besides schools and other educational institutions, Mr. Puttanna said that 28,000 teachers and lecturers had been appointed during the 20 month tenure of the former Chief Minister.

Criticising the BJP government's move to introduce 'Nali Kali' stating that by having no English subject until Std III, Mr. Puttanna said that the government had been unjust to poor children as they find it difficult to cope up with the tougher syllabi of Std IV and higher classes.

He also appealed to the government to postpone the recruitment of PU lecturers by 20 days or more so that they get enough time to adjust to the new syllabus and prepare accordingly.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support.
