Auto rickshaw drivers stage stir demanding stands

Mangalore, May 25: Auto rickshaw drivers in city on Friday went on strike for half day in order to pressurise the district administration and local authorities to notify more auto rickshaw parking stands in the city.

Hundreds of auto rickshaw drivers took part in the protest walk from Urwa Stores to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, where a protest meeting was held.

The protest was organized by Mangalore City Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association.

Speaking on the occasion Association President Ivan D'Souza said that more than only 74 auto rickshaw stands have been officially announced in this vast city, despite 350 auto-rickshaw stands have been identified.

Many of these stands have been removed due to widening and concretisation of roads. Mangalore has more than 5,600 auto-rickshaws, however they do not have stands, he regretted.

“Our neighbouring district Udupi, has good stands, which have a sun/rain cover, benches for the rickshaw drivers to rest, coin phones and other facilities. Such stands should come up in our district,” he demanded.

There are 300 stands identified in 60 wards of MCC. These should be announced and all facilities should be given immediately, he said.

Mr D'Souza also said that the association has discussed the matter with Police Commisisoner Seemanth Kumar Singh, who supported the proposal as it would bring in better discipline as well as add the beauty of the city.

Post-Sabarimala pilgrimage drinking party turns fatal in Udupi; youth killed in midnight brawl

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
