Rain fury hits city; People worried as houses get inundated

Mangalore, June 17: Continuous rains over the last few hours threw normal life out of gear in the city on Sunday.

Roads in the city resembled mini lakes owing to the enourmous amount of water flow, making it difficult for vehicle users to ply normally. Identifying potholes and road egdes especially of concrete roads that differentiate it from the footpaths, was a problem faced by vehicle users particularly.

In areas such as Jeppinamogaru, Mallikatta, Mahakalipadpu, Nanthur and the like, people had to brave knee-height waters to walk around.

In Baabugudde of Attavara, a huge tree fell down owing to the rains, which was later cleared off from the road by MCC workers with the help of locals.

At noon, a May flower tree had fallen blocking the road near Pandeshwar railway crossing. Fire service personnel cleared the road after an hour long struggle.

Rain water intruded into houses in areas such as Ujjodi and Gorigudda. Locals are complaining that the improper four laning work of the national highway has contributed to the situation.

Houses in low lying areas of Ekkuru have been inundated as well. Locals fear that if rains continue their fury, many of them would have to vacate their houses. In many places lack of outlets for the overflowing water to join the sea or nearby rivers is compounding problems.

Meanehile, the weather department has in its forecast said that coastal Karnataka and Malnad regions will receive heavy rainfall in the next two days.
