Udupi: eight-member gang in police net over jewellery heist

Udupi, July 26: Eight persons have been arrested in connection with a robbery case here on July 13, the Udupi police said in a press release.


The eight persons came posing as “antique dealers” to the house of Suryakumar Shet near Vidyodaya School and brandished knives and then stuffed cloth into the mouths of Mr. Shet and his servant Anant Poojary, and took away gold and silver ornaments and some silver coins, the release said.


Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah has announced a reward of Rs. 10,000 to the police team, which had cracked the case


The eight accused are Avinash Jogi (27) of Baddakatte in Bantwal taluk, Sudarshan Poojary (30) of Hassan, Sachin Raj (21) of Bantwal, Yashwant Poojary (25) of Kallige village in Bantwal taluk, Nitin Kumar (22) of Amtady village in Bantwal taluk, Navneet (21) of Amtady village in Bantwal taluk, Nitin Bangera (28) of Mangalore, and Achyut Acharya (30) of Beluwai village in Mangalore taluk.


The police had arrested Avinash Jogi, Sudarshan Poojary and Sachin Raj at B.C. Road, and Yashwant Poojary Nitin Kumar and Navneet in Bantwal. They arrested Nitin Bangera and Achyut Acharya in Mangalore. The police had recovered one 12-diamond studded ring, one single-diamond ring, one gold biscuit, 17-gem studded gold chain, and one gold chain from the accused.


The value of valuables recovered has been estimated at Rs. 8 lakh while some more gold and silver ornaments and silver coins are yet to be recovered.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
