Mangalore, August 11: Members of All College Students Association (ACSA) staged a semi-nude rally to protest against the change in carryover system in polytechnic courses on Saturday.
A procession was held from Jyothi Circle to the Deputy Commissioner's office in order to urge the government to find a feasible solution to their problem.
As per the regulations of the carry over system in polytechnic courses, a student who failed in more than eight subjects in the current year is not qualified to be admitted to the next academic year. ACSA demanded that the state government change its decision and allow all diploma students to continue their studies even if they are failed in all subjects.
Blaming Higher Education minister C.T. Ravi for his inefficiency, advocate and ACSA President Dinakar Shetty said that playing with the students' education was wrong. “It is the incompetence of the government that has made us take up such a protest. Even after 12 days of satyagraha, no one heeded to our demand”, he said, stating that he doubts if Mr.Ravi was even aware of the carryover system.
Mr.Shetty said students would lose precious years if the problem was not rectified. If they are not given a chance to complete their term or course, there are chances that they might become criminals. Some of them might resort to naxalism. Necessary steps have to be ensured by the government, he said.
Citing that 6-7 students had committed suicide and 14-15 others had attempted to do so, he said that the change in regulations in the carryover system of subject had led them to take such dire decisions.
He expressed the Association's faith in Deputy Speaker of State Legislative Assembly Yogish N. Bhat and said that they would not give up till their demand is met.
ACSA State General Secretary Shipal Raj, District President Uttam Alva, District Secretary Sachin Moray and several others participated in the protest.
