Moodbidri, August 13: At a time when people are taken aback when it comes to donating any part of the body, a septuagenarian hailing from a traditional family has set an example by donating his body, at Moodukonaje on Friday.

Ramakrishna (77), a native of Belagaje in Pambethadi of Sullia taluk, had settled at Moodukonaje after selling his property, two years ago. He was ailing for the last one year and passed away at Alva's hospital. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

He had written a note on March 22, stating that his cadaver should be donated for medical research. Accordingly, the family members handed over the body to KMC Anatomy department after performing the rituals on Friday.

Ramakrishnaiah who had studied upto seventh standard had a great knowledge in agriculture and dairy farming. Realising the fact that students who are pursuing medicine are facing problems owing to shortage of bodies, he had written a will to donate his body. He had even expressed his will to donate his eyes, and kidney.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, KMC Anatomy department head Latha V Prabhu said that the hospital gets 30 to 35 applications expressing willingness to donate bodies every year. However, the hospital gets only three to four bodies in a year.

“Many a time, owing to tradition pertaining to the last rituals, the relatives fail to donate the body.”
