JD(S) stages protest marches in Mangalore, Manipal in support of farmers

Mangalore, September 8: Members of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district units of the Janata Dal (Secular) took out a protest marchs in support of farmers in Mangalore and Manipal on Friday.

The 'padayatra', culminated at the Deputy Commissioner's Offices in both cities.

In a memorandum addressed to Governor H.R. Bharadwaj, and submitted to Deputy Commissioners of twin distrits, presidents of the district units of JD(S) urged that the Government should take immediate steps to revive the ailing Brahmavar Sugar Factory. This would go a long way in helping the farmers.

Listing out the demands, they said title deeds should be given to the poor people immediately, and sites should be provided to those not having sites. The sites of the poor people should be regularized. They said there were problems in the distribution of ration cards, which required an immediate solution.

The evacuees of the Udupi Power Corporation Ltd's thermal plant project, underground crude storage unit of the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd., and Suzlon project in the district should be provided with adequate compensation. They should also be provided with jobs.

The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had always fought for the rights of the farmers, they said.

But on the other hand both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in the State and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre were involved in a host of scams and had little time to solve the problems of the poor people, they said.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
