Mangalore, September 10: Minister for health and family welfare Aravind Limbavali, who paid a visit to Government Wenlock Hospital, here on Monday said that the 150-year-old hospital needed a facelift.
The minister said that the Hospital possesses funds to the tune of Rs. 9 crore which have even been collected on a PPP basis from private donors. These funds should be utilized in getting dialysis equipements, increase in bed capacity, renovation and expansion of buildings, and development of other infrastructure, he said.
N Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, placed before the Minister demands such as permission to utilize funds for the construction of psychiatric ward and staff quarters, procurement of ventilators and X-Ray machines besides other infrastructure development of the Hospital, provision of Super Speciality services in cancer, cardio, nephrology and other treatments, and upgarading of 500 beds at Lady Goschen hospital from the existing 200 odd bed facility.
Review meet
Mr. Limbavali chaired a health review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office earlier in the morning in the presence of N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of Assembly, Dr. N S Chennappa Gowda, DK Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, MCC, and Dr. K N Vijayprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayat.
Briefing on the various aspects concerning the Health scenario in the district, Health Department officials told the Minister that occurrence of Malaria cases have been on the decline in the past two months and that no malaria deaths have been reported in the district this year, while there was one death caused by dengue. The Minister expressed dissatisfaction at the larvae survey work carried out by officials in taluks of Puttur and Belthangady where only 10,285 houses were surveyed of the total 45,486 houses and 29,854 out of 51, 847 houses respectively.
The Minister was told that 4 samples tested positive for H1N1 in Mangalore Urban area while 1 tested positive in Sullia. One H1N1 death was caused in Surathkal.
Total cases of Rat Fever in the district amounted to 86 with 2 deaths. Leprosy rate in the district is 0.29%, a health official said, adding that most of these cases were found among migrant workers from Orissa, Bihar and other states who are working in construction sites and companies like NMPT, SEZ etc. Prevalance of HIV in the district is 0.30% and 596 cases were tested positive for HIV in the district, the Minister was told.
A request was placed before the Minister to provide an exclusive mobile health unit facility in 11 villages of Belthangady's interior naxal affected areas.
