Udupi, September 13: Two young engineers pursuing their M.S. in Embedded Systems at Manipal Centre for Information Science (MCIS) have won third prize for designing “Evo Mouse”, which makes computer/laptop more user-friendly to visually-challenged persons, at an international-level application design contest.

According to a press release issued here, “Evo Mouse”, an embedded system, developed by Navin Bhaskar and his brother Nitin Bhaskar, has been devised with an intention of making computer more friendly and interactive to visually challenged persons. It works as an effective interface between a visually-challenged person and machine (computer).
The primary goal of this project is to act as a substitute to the mouse for visually-challenged persons. In addition, it can also be used to read out RSS news feeds. The four buttons in the “Evo Mouse” perform multiple functions enabled with speech to help visually-challenged persons.

Each of the four buttons had configurable functions attached to them. Clicking on them activates the function assigned to it, such as opening a word processor. All these actions can be supplemented with speech messages that can give useful information to the users of this device. The “Evo Mouse” is compatible on both windows and linux operating systems.
The “Evo Mouse” has been given third prize among numerous entries received from all over the world at the 'STM32 Open World Application Design Contest' organised by Raisonance, ST France, in collaboration with Concourse Autonomie, ST Erricson, and other multi-national companies

In spite of tough competition, the sole Indian entry submitted by these two brothers was adjudged as the third best with a cash prize of $ 1500, a shield, and a kit worth Rs. 1 lakh containing valuable software and boards. The first and second prizes went to Czechoslovakia and France, respectively.

The prizes were announced at the headquarters of the sponsoring company at Grenoble in France in August. These two young engineers had earlier received “distinctive excellence” prize in the international competition conducted by “Circuit Cellar” magazine and sponsored by NXP Semiconductor.
