Mangalore, September 23: The week-long ceasefire of combing operations announced by the State government to enable Maoists to surrender ended on Sunday evening. However, officials have confirmed that not a single Maoist was surrendered during ceasefire.

Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda, Commander of Anti-Naxal Force Alok Kumar and Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal said they had not yet received any information about surrender of Maoists.

Mr. Kumar said that the ceasefire was announced following feelers sent by suspected Maoists about their intention to surrender. Declining to reveal further details, Mr. Kumar said there were still hopes of surrender of some suspected Maoists by Sunday evening.

Mr. Kumar said the ANF personnel have been confined to their camps, following Chief Minister's announcement of ceasefire on September 15. Mr. Goyal told presspersons on Saturday that there were no combing operations in Dakshina Kannada district.

Some television channel reporters have received a statement from the Communist Party of India (Maoist) Karnataka State Committee. The statement dated September 8, said to have been issued by CPI (Maoist) spokesperson Gangadhar, condemned killing of Yellappa in a police encounter near Subrahmanya on September 5.
