Mangalore, October 2: Congress should not accept those who keep changing the political parties aspiring to get tickets just for becoming MLA, MP and Minister, said former union minister and senior Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary.
He was speaking at the Congress convention on the theme 'Congress ge banni, badalavane thanni' (Come to Congress, Usher in a Change) organised by Mangalore Town Congress Block here on Tuesday.
He said that congress required true and honest party workers and not those who jump from one party to another with the intention of power.
Calling upon the party workers to uphold the ideals of Gandhi, Mr Poojary said that his party should address the problems of needy in the society.
Squarely blaming Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar for the present crisis on the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Mr Poojary said that the state government has completely failed to tackle the row over distribution of water.
He said there was no need for the chief minister to have staged a walk out during the Prime Minister's meeting. He should have convinced the Prime Minister on the prevailing ground realities instead. “That was the first mistake made by the Chief Minister. The government failed to effectively put up its case before both Apex Court and Cauvery River Authority.” Poojary said.
He also assured that if people of Mangalore voted Congress to power in the forthcoming election of Mangalore City Corporation, it will reduce property tax under Self Assessment Scheme (SAS). “Though BJP had promised not to hike tax in the election manifesto, it did not keep its words,” he said.
Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake said the state government has completely neglected the betterment of the state instead it has been busy in solving internal-bickering.
Applauding the centre's decision to allow FDI in retail sector Mr Sorake said that the main beneficiaries of this scheme would be the farmers of the country. “At present, farmers of the country get only 33 per cent of the price for the crops grown by them. With FDI, the farmers can sell their products without the intervention of middlemen,” he said.
Rains play spoilsport
Due to heavy downpour that lashed city, disrupted the spirit of congress men who had turned up for the convention. There was very low gathering at the convention. Most of the chairs in front of the stage were empty as guests and other party workers were seen standing holding umbrellas.
