The accused has been identified as Saeed Asad, a resident of Addyar on the outskirts of the city.
Police said the girl, a resident of Lady Hill, was walking home after evening shopping when the accused attempted to outrage her modesty.
The woman immediately raised an alarm, following which locals in the area rushed to her assistance.
In the melee that followed, the accused received a thrashing from the members of the public who gathered at the spot. He was then handed over to the police who placed him under arrest. A complaint has been lodged at Urwa Police Station.
