Police crack five theft cases after arresting three; Jewelleries stolen from three temples recovered

Mangalore, October 27: A motorbike ride by two youth without the protective headgears helped Mangalore city police to crack at least five theft cases under the limits of Commissionerate.

Sleuths attached to Mangalore East Police Station succeeded in arresting three thieves after two of them were stopped by a patrolling police for riding motorbike without helmet during a vehicle inspection spree on Kadrikambla road in the city on Friday.

The arrested are Harish Poojary alias Harish (35) son of Naryana Poojary, a resident of Kulavoor village in Mangalore taluk, Ramesh alias Raju alias Muniswamy (32), son of Raju from Chandregowda Estate, Ooty in Tamil Nadu, who was residing at Pandeshwar, Mangalore and Vishwanath Devadiga alias Vishwa (28), son of Sundara Devadiga of Hosangadi village in Belthangady taluk.

Police have also recovered stolen property worth Rs 1,62,675 from the accused.

It is learnt that all three arrested had a crime record and cases were registered against them in various police stations in and around Mangalore and Tamil Nadu.

A police press release issued here stated that when Inspector Raghav S Padil of Mangalore East Police station and his subordinates interrogated the motorbike-borne duo, it was revealed that they had stolen the same two-wheeler from a house in Kadri Hills in the city in August 2012. The owner of the motorbike identified as Kiran Kumar had in fact lodged a complaint with police after losing his 1986 model Hero Honda.

While the police subjected the motorbike rider Harish and pillion rider Vishwanath to a rigorous interrogation, they admitted that they had involved in several theft cases. Based on the information given by the duo, police managed to arrest one of their associates Ramesh from his temporary house in Pandeshwar.

Police said that the arrested confessed to their involvement in thefts in five places including three temples. They had stolen a gold chain from Koragajjana Gudi in Nantoorpadav, silver jewellery from another Koragajjana Gudi located at Mary Hill area and cash and silver jewellery from Mahamayi temple in Mulki. They also had decamped with gold jewelleary and other valuables from a house in Mulki besides stealing the parked motorbike of Kiran Kumar, said the release.

Major facelift for Mangaluru's sporting heart: Mangala Stadium set for 2-month closure to upgrade synthetic track

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
