Pejawar seer lashes out at BJP government; calls for fresh election in State

January 7, 2013
Udupi, Jan 7: Pejawar Mutt Seer Sri Vishweshatheertha Swami said that the term of the present government in State should end at the earliest and fresh public mandate should be sought in order to get rid off unstable administrative atmosphere.

Speaking to media persons, the Seer said that the government is in total confusion and the situation calls for concern over the development of the State. The internal differences within the BJP and government have affected the development process which is at standstill.

“The leaders in the government are confused to the extent that they do not know what is happening. I would like to urge the people to go for a government which has stability and will offer secured governance. The agriculture and industrialisation process should go hand in hand, however, agriculture should not be sidelined and sacrificed in the interest of industrialisation. Similarly, minorities should be treated fairly on par with majorities. There shall be no discrimination. Public should support the political parties that condemn corruption. Corruption should be controlled,” he stressed.

Lamenting that he is targeted by the challengers and supporters of the rituals 'Made Snana' and 'Pankthi Bedha' for unnecessary reasons, the seer said that he was the person who proposed the idea of 'Ede Snana' in order to keep alive the beliefs of the devotees and also satisfy their beliefs. 'Ede Snana' is nothing but rolling over the 'Prasadam' of the Lord.

“I would also prefer devotees to roll over by performing 'Urulu Seve,' so that their prayers will be dedicated to the god. There is nothing wrong in performing 'Urulu Seve' or 'Ede Snana' as it is not similar to rolling over the plantain leaves comprising left over of Brahmin people. Both rituals 'Urulu Seve' or 'Ede Snana' are not unhygienic, he added.

Reiterating that he is repeatedly made scapegoat for all unnecessary issues, the seer questioned why only he and Krishna mutt is targeted.

“Why I am blamed and criticised for all the attempts I make to set right the wrong things. I was the one who raised voice against 'Made Snana'. The rituals 'Made Snana' and 'Pankthi Bedha' is practiced all over Karnataka. I am at the helm of criticism for the reasons unknown. Is it that the so called intellectuals and progressive thinkers are against me for the cause that I am trying to take Dalit community people along with the mainstream and trying to make Hindu community stronger,” he asked. “They are against my idea of propagating the ideals of Hinduism. If Dalits are part of Hindu society, the religion will be much larger and stronger. Consequently my attempts are criticised by these people who do not get along with the idea of Dalits being part of Hindu religion,” he alleged.

He said that he is ready for an open talk with the people who oppose the rituals. However, he does not prefer talking to a huge mob.

“I am ready to negotiate with a group of five to six. Instead of censuring me unreasonably, these people should come to me when I am in Udupi and hold talks with me over the issue”. The Seer added that he is not responsible for the lathi charge incident, however, he defended the act of police stating that it was inevitable.

“If police would not have taken a decision, the consequence would have been disastrous. There were possibilities of harming the temple structure within and outside by the gathered huge crowd of the agitators,” he said.

The Seer also called upon the people residing in and around coal based Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) thermal power project to stand up and fight for their survival.

“I have been doing my best. There are no positive results. If people prefer fighting non-violently against the thermal project, I would lend all my support to them,” he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
