Mangalore, Jan 16: Bidar and Gulbarga are among the 'minority concentrated' districts identified by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, where special development programmes to uplift the status of minorities will be implemented, said K Rahman Khan, Union Minister for Minority Affairs.

Speaking to media persons at the district Congress office in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr. Khan said that a total of 90 districts in the country have been identified as 'minority concentrated' districts i.e. where population of minorities is above 25% and where there is a lack of basic facilities. The Ministry of Minority Affairs will supervise Government of India's multi-sector development plan in these districts which includes setting up of schools, hostels, hospitals, area development, sanitation enhancement etc. Gulbarga and Bidar districts of Karnataka are among these 90 districts identified by the government and a grant of Rs. 40 crore has been set aside for these two districts, the Minister said.

The Ministry has been holding scholarship programmes for students of minority communities, besides setting up skill development centres and coaching for minorities, he said. The Ministry is supervising implementation of Prime Minister's 15 point programme for the benefit of minorities, he added.

On a query on a statement given by a BJP leader that the state government will not grant land for the proposed Tipu Sultan University at Srirangapatna, Mr. Khan said that the BJP is reacting needlessly over the issue.

“While in power, they have set up institutions with names of their choice and we never reacted. There is no need for them to react over this”, he said.
