Mangalore, Feb 17: Mangalore and other parts of Dakshina Kannada experienced heavy rain coupled with lightning and thunder early on Sunday that brought the day temperature down by few notches.

The day began with a cloudy weather soon followed by showers. Also, there has been unexpected rainfall in many parts of the state for the past two days bringing relief to people from the scorching heat.
Director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre Dr V S Prakash said that the rainfall occurred due to a low pressure area formed over the Sri Lankan coast.
“These are part of the pre-monsoon showers. The minimum temperatures rose at a few places over Coastal Karnataka and South Interior over the last few days and it built up pressure to bring relief in the form of light showers,” Prakash said.
Rainfall occurred at a few places over Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka. Srirangapatna in Mandya district, Rayalpadu of Kolar, Madhugiri in Tumkur recorded 4 cm rain each, while Kadra in Uttara Kannada and Pandavapura in Mandya districts recorded 3 cm each until Saturday morning.

Bangalore recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius on Saturday and light to moderate rains are also expected on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Prakash said that this rain would be help farmers for fodder and horticulture crops. Referring to the reports, Prakash said, on the psychological side, this short spell after high temperatures will bring down irritability among people.
“As the harvesting of rabi crops has been completed, it is unlikely to affect agriculture. Horticulture crops like mango will benefit,” said Srinivas Gowda, president of Mango Growers Association in Chintamani.
