Cong promises to transform Port City into 'Silicon Valley'

Mangalore, Mar 1: The Congress party has proposed to bring Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project to Mangalore if voted to power in the upcoming Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) polls.

Speaking after releasing the election manifesto of the party for the MCC polls at a programme in Mangalore on Friday, Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP, said that the Congress intends to take up several developmental projects for the city of Mangalore including the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Stating that Mangalore is a hub of educational and medical institutions, besides being a banking and commercial centre, Mr. Fernandes said that the party will work towards making Mangalore another 'silicon valley' of the country, while effectively tackling people's problems and addressing their basic needs.

B Janardhana Poojary, Former Union Minister, who inaugurated the party office for election campaign on the occasion, advised party activists to carry out rigorous door-to-door campaigning for the party. People must be made aware of the contents of the party's election manifesto with a clear message that there would be no increase in property tax and tax on drinking water. "The Congress will work towards making Mangalore a peaceful city and bring back communal harmony," Mr. Poojary said.

B Ramanath Rai, District President of the Congress, Ivan D'Souza, KPCC member, J R Lobo, Former MCC Commissioner, were present among other members of the DKCC.

Election Manifesto

Promises made by the Congress in its election manifesto for the upcoming MCC polls include completion of Thumbe Vented Dam work at the earliest, creation of underground cable ducts for electricity, construction of sophisticated and modern market spaces, development of roads and footpaths, reintroduction of old license granting process for buildings from the MCC itself to avoid extension of process to MUDA, setting up of a new bus stand for private buses, among others.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support. The 9th Annual Day—EXCELLENTIA—was a memorable and successful event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
