Mangalore, Apr 12: Bharatiya Janata Party, which has already kicked started its campaign for May 5 Assembly polls, has been chalking out intensive strategy to bring minority dominant Mangalore (erstwhile Ullal) constituency under its fold.

The rumours of the BJP trying to snatch away the constituency from the hands of the Congress by dividing secular and Muslim votes through pushing more Muslim candidates to poll fray is also doing rounds in Ullal area.

The constituency, which has around 1.7 lakh voters is considered as a Congress stronghold, thanks to nearly 50 per cent of minority vote bank.

It is learnt that the BJP too had thought of fielding a Muslim candidate in Muslim dominated Mangalore constituency before finalising Chandrahas Ullal's name. However, in a favourable atmosphere for the saffron party, besides U T Khader, three new Muslim candidates have entered poll fray in Mangalore, who are all going to break and divide secular votes, especially Muslim votes.

While the SDPI and Muslim League have fielded Akram Hasan and Riyaz Harekala respectively, activist Kabeer Ullal has formally announced his candidature on Friday. He is expected to file nomination papers on Monday.

Ironically, all three above Muslim candidates have vented their anger against incumbent Congress MLA U T Khader instead of targeting BJP, which is known for its Hindutva approach in coastal Karnataka. Mr Khader had defeated two BJP candidates in last two elections.

In a press meet on Friday Kabeer Ullal said that he (Kabeer) had been active in social work and had helped people in times of need besides taking on the police and being fighting for the cause of victims of torture and violence without any fear, which is why he enjoys public trust.

Meanwhile, CPI (M) also has decided to field Krishnappa Salian as its candidate from Mangalore constituency, who is also expected to pocket a considerable number of secular votes.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
