Assembly polls: More than 20 % of candidates have criminal cases

Bangalore, Apr 13: A total of 40 out of 194 candidates of the BJP and Congress contesting the May five Assembly elections have criminal cases against them, according to NGOs -- Karnataka Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

They released an analysis of the first list of BJP and Congress candidates, focusing on the criminal and financial assets of the re-contesting candidates, among others. As many as 140 candidates have been declared by the BJP and 177 by the Congress, totalling 317.

Affidavits from previous assembly elections in 2008 were available for 85 out of 140

candidates from BJP and 109 out of 177 candidates from the Congress. In total, 194 out of 317 affidavits of candidates announced in the first list from BJP and Congress were available and analysed.

Forty out of 194 nominees -- 24 from BJP and 16 from Congress -- or 21 per cent of candidates whose affidavits were available from previous elections have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Of them, 16 candidates -- ten from BJP and six from Congress -- have declared serious criminal charges in their last submitted affidavit like murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping.

As many as 130 out of the 317 or 41 per cent candidates announced in the first list by BJP and Congress are recontesting MLAs from the outgoing assembly. The remaining 64 who are re-contesting did not win last time.

Seventy-two out of the 140 or 51 per cent candidates announced in the first list from BJP are MLAs in the outgoing Karnataka Assembly. From the Congress, 58 out of 177 or 33 per cent of candidates announced in the first list are recontesting MLAs.

Among the 194 candidates, Eshwara Bhimanna Khandre of the Congress from Bhalki has declared four criminal cases with charges related to murder, attempt to murder, followed by Balachandra Laxmanrao Jarkhiholi of BJP from Arabhavi who has declared one case with charges related to murder, kidnapping, attempt to murder and Jarakiholi Satish Laxmanrao of Congress from Yemkanmardi constituency (declared one case with charges related to murder, kidnapping, attempt to murder).

Out of the 194 candidates, 113 or 58 per cent candidates were crorepatis. 44 out of 85 or 52 per cent candidates from BJP were crorepatis and 69 out of 109 or 63 per cent candidates from Congress were crorepatis as per their previously submitted affidavits.

Among the 194 candidates from both BJP and Congress, R V Deshpande of Congress from Haliyal constituency has declared the highest assets worth Rs 145.57 crore followed by M Krishnappa from Vijayanagar constituency with assets worth Rs 129.32 crore and N A Haris of Congress from Shantinagar constituency with assets worth Rs 85.34 crore.

The highest asset among the BJP candidates is with N S Nandiesha Reddy from K R Pura constituency worth Rs 36.24 crore, according to the analysis.

Mangaluru: The Air India Express is all set to increase the frequency of its flights from Mangaluru to Abu Dhabi to a daily flight from July 22. 

At present, Air India Express operates four flights in a week to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

This will also result in an uptick in daily flights to Bengaluru to eight, with AIE and IndiGo restarting flights and AIE routing aircraft for enhanced Abu Dhabi operations.

At present, IndiGo and AIE operate a total of five flights daily on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru sector. From July 8, the daily flights on this sector will go up to six, with AIE restarting its second daily flight. 

This number will further increase to seven from July 22, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. AIE will operate this additional flight onwards to Abu Dhabi from Mangaluru.

The Bengaluru-Mangaluru leg will operate purely as a domestic flight, and Abu Dhabi passengers will board at Mangaluru.

From August 1, flights on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru sector will go up to eight on three days in a week – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, respectively. AIE will operate the third flight on these days to go with its two daily flights.

IndiGo will operate five daily flights, including the fifth flight which it announced in the summer schedule starting March 31. For operations on this sector that sees high passenger footfalls, AIE uses the Boeing-737 Max and IndiGo uses the Airbus series aircraft.

On the Mumbai-Mangaluru sector, AIE will operate the afternoon flight from July 16 in place of Air India, which will continue to operate the morning flight.

Currently, airlines from Mangaluru International Airport, operate five daily flights to Mumbai and Bengaluru, two daily flights to Chennai and Hyderabad, respectively, one daily flight to Delhi, three weekly flights to Pune and one weekly flight to Tiruchirappalli.

International flights operation includes two daily flights to Dubai by AIE, and four weekly flights by IndiGo, four weekly to Dammam, three weekly to Muscat, two weekly to Doha and Bahrain, and one weekly flight each to Kuwait and Jeddah – all by AIE.

Notorious gangster Jayesh Poojary, who had been brought to a court in Belagavi connection with the cases pending against him, allegedly raised 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogans in the court premises, resulting in people and advocates, assembled there, roughing him up on Wednesday.

Police personnel present there secured Poojary and brought him to the APMC police station.

Poojary, a native of Dakshin Kannada, has been housed at Central Prison, Hindalga in Belagavi. He had earlier made threatening calls to the office of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and had demanded ransom.

Nagpur police had taken him into their custody for investigations.

He was brought to court here on Wednesday in connection with a pending case when the incident took place.

Mangaluru: A woman from Andhra Pradesh drowned in the sea off Ullal beach. The locals were successful in rescuing four others from drowning.

The deceased was identified as Parimi Rathna Kumari (57), wife of P L Prasanna from Serilingampally. When a group of women were on the shore of Ullal beach, a huge wave washed them away.

A group of five women from Hyderabad had gone to Mysuru on June 6. After touring in Mysuru, they hired a car to travel to Kodagu on June 7. On June 9 they visited Kukke Subrahmanya. On Monday, they had visited Dharmasthala and Ullal beach where the mishap occurred, said a member in the group.

The locals rescued four women, however, Parimi Rathna lost consciousness in the water. Later, her body was retrieved and taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.
