Mangalore, Apr 16: Everyone knows the coastal heat that is enough to melt down the skin. In this scorching heat people head to gulp up some natural coolant like tender coconut. Shocking but true, despite huge patches of coconut plantations in the region, Mangalorean markets have no tender coconuts this summer!

While the handcarts selling tender coconuts are usually closed after having finished with the day's stock, the shops and markets have some left over tender coconuts which are unfit for drinking.

Over the last few days, the vendors running tender coconut business have not come to do their business because there is no supply of tender coconut.

Prices shoot up

While the cost of a tender coconut varies between Rs 15 to Rs 17, during this peak season and due to shortage of supply, the cost has gone up to Rs 20 to Rs 25. Superior variety of tender coconut known as 'Gendali' costs Rs 30.

It is said that since it was Ugadi festival on April 11 and then there was Bisu festival on April 14, most workers had taken leave for a period of five days, due to which there had been no supply. The market will be supplied with tender coconut within a couple of days, say the sources adding that the entire problem was caused due to shortage of workers in Tamilnadu owing to 'Bisu festival'.

A vendor at Mannagudda area of the city says that he sees a business of over 200 tender coconuts per day but over the last few days his customers had to go back unattended as there was no stock to quench their thirst.

All said and done, shortage of tender coconut has added to the heat this summer.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
