Mangalore, Apr 21: A comprehensive plan for providing drinking water to Mangalore city, development of roads and footpaths, free medical services to poor, parking facility at the service bus stand, alternative market facilities for vegetable, fish and meat shops and street vendors, permanent house facilities for civic workers are among the main promises of Dakshina Kannada district unit of JD(S).

The faction ridden party released its election manifesto after inaugurating Mangalore South constituency election office in Balmatta-Bendoorwell road on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore South constituency JD(S) candidate S P Changappa said that those who had joined the JD(S) from other parties have now quit the party, but the loyal workers and leaders who have worked for the JD(S) from long time, continue to remain in the party. The party will unitedly fight the election, he said.

Reacting to the allegations from a few quarters that he has not yet obtained the party membership, Changappa said that he had obtained the membership 15 days ago.

“I was an active member of the BJP for a long time, but quit the party due to ideological differences and was away from politics for last 10 years. I joined the JD(S) by accepting the party's ideology. I had no intention to contest the election, but decided for the same as the party leader A Sadananda Shetty stepped back from contesting the election in the last minute and insisted me to contest in his place,” he clarified.Speaking after releasing the manifesto, A Sadananda Shetty said that he backed from contesting the election due to health reasons.

“I recommended the name of Changappa to replace me as he has the capability to fight the polls,” Sadananda Shetty said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
