Five check posts in Dakshina Kannada under CCTV surveillance

Mangalore, Apr 26: Five check posts in Dakshina Kannada have been brought under CCTV surveillance as per the directive of the Election Commission, Abhishek Goyal, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada rural district, has said.

Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Friday, Mr. Goyal said that check posts in Charmadi, Gundya, Suradka, Jalsoor and Farangipet have been equipped with camera surveillance which can be monitored from the district headquarters via internet.

Although there are 12 check posts in the district, the police department chose to install cameras in these five check posts keeping in mind their need in post-election days as well, Mr. Goyal said. Each check post has been equipped with four cameras which have a recording capacity that can last a whole month.

Effective policing is being carried out at check posts all over the district and an amount of Rs. 21 lakh in five different cases, suspected to be used for election campaigning, has been recovered, the SP said.

A total of 933 polling stations in four Assembly constituencies come under the jurisdiction of the DK police (the other constituencies come under Mangalore Commissionerate). GPS inputs have been gathered for all these polling stations and the same have been uploaded to Google maps for effective monitoring of situation in each of the polling stations, Mr. Goyal said.

District police have been given enough Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) along with excise squad, coastal security forces and forest guards. CPMF personnel from non-Karnataka regions are being trained in Kannada so that they can effectively communicate with the people, Mr. Goyal added.

The SP said that there are 700-800 police personnel in the district who are eligible to cast their vote in the state Assembly elections and arrangements for postal ballots for them are being made. The department has already received 550 postal ballots, Mr. Goyal said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
