Temperatures across the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada came down by at least 10 degrees due to sudden rain, which lashed many towns and villages of the district besides the portal city of Mangalore.
Heavy rains coupled with gusty wind lashed Sullia taluk. Moodbidri, Uppinangady, Kokkada, Bantwal, Belthangady and Thokkottu-Ullal too witnessed showers.
The surprise rain brought a great relief for the leaders and activists of various political parties, who had been engaged in rigorous campaign for May 5 Karnataka Assembly polls amidst rising mercury.
Even though extreme weather is not new for people in coastal belt, where the temperature normally ranges between 33 degrees and 38 degrees Celsius, the contestants had faced various problems including shortage of tender coconuts.
The soaring mercury had also posed problem for candidates to hold public meetings, forcing them to ensure shamiana facility and drinking water lest people suffer sun stroke.
Lighting claims life
In Mardadka village of Bantwal taluk, lightening coupled with moderate rainfall claimed on Friday evening. Dharnappa Shetty (47), who was working as a mason, died after lightening strike, sources said.
Lightening has also damaged a house in Navoora in Sarapady village of Bantwal taluk. The house belongs to Antony Pais.
Ramya's rainy road-show
Clouds covered the sky all of a sudden and burst into rains within minutes when Congress star campaigner Ramya embarked on a road-show at Thokkottu in support of Mangalore MLA U T Khader.
Ramya travelled in an open car waving to her fans and requesting them to vote for Mr Khader.
“This is a wonderful rainy evening. In my childhood I loved to play in rain. Now, I love to campaign in rain,” said the sandalwood actor, gently wiping rain drops from her face.
