Mangalore, May 2: Calling Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a 'mass murderer' and 'encounter specialist', Congress leader V S Ugrappa has said that the BJP stalwart has used a 'sadist' approach for campaigning in Karnataka.

Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore, Mr. Ugrappa lashed back at Mr. Modi over his allegations against the Congress led UPA government.

“He (Mr. Modi) had stated in Bangalore that to count the zeroes in the amount of corruption carried out by the UPA, one would have to measure a distance from the office of the Prime Minister to the office of Sonia Gandhi. I want to ask him as to whether he will choose to measure the distance between B S Yeddyurappa's residence and the residence of D V Sadananda Gowda or the distance between the office of the Karnataka chief minister to the RSS state office to count the number of zeroes in the Rs. 1 lakh crore corruption that the BJP government in the state has been involved in”, Mr. Ugrappa said.

Commenting on the state of affairs in Mr. Modi's own backyard, Mr. Ugrappa said that there is 48% malnutrition in Gujarat and contrary to his claim, there is supply of electricity on alternate weeks in the state. Mr. Modi's popularity is not upwardly mobile and is on the decline instead. “Why did the number of seats the BJP won come down in Gujarat this time?” Mr. Ugrappa asked.

'Cong will implement Lokayukta recommendations on mining scam'

Stating that a fact finding committee headed by him had brought out the issue of the state's wealth being looted by mining mafia as early as November 2008, Mr. Ugrappa said that even though the Lokayukta itself has submitted its final report in July 2011, no action has been taken by the BJP government yet.

“When my fact finding committee raised the issue of mining scam, all their leaders including their then national president Nitin Gadkari played it down and tried to brush it under the carpet. The Lokayukta then submitted a report and said that there has been a theft of the state's resources. It said that a revenue loss of Rs.1857 crore has been caused to the state exchequer. The Lokayukta report recommended that a total of Rs. 22,000 crore be recovered from the mining mafia culprits in three months' time but the BJP government did nothing. When we come to power, we will initiate the recovery proceedings and prosecute those whose prosecution has been recommended in the report”, Mr. Ugrappa said.

'Yeddyurappa will be Karnataka's Kalyan Singh'

Mr. Ugrappa said that Karnataka Janata Paksha chief B S Yeddyurappa will soon become Kalyan Singh of Karnataka.

“Mr. Yeddyurappa's public apology to L K Advani is an indication of this. I have a feeling that after the Assembly elections are over, the KJP and the BSR Congress parties will reunite with the BJP. People who have gone away will realize what their strength is and come back to the BJP. Hence, people will not vote for this coalition in this election. They will vote for a single strength party which is the Congress”, he said.

'No new cow slaughter law needed'

When asked about Congress leader Siddharamiah's remarks about the Congress withdrawing the cow slaughter bill proposed by the BJP after coming to power, Mr. Ugrappa said that the cow slaughter law of 1964 is already in force and there is no need for a separate law for the same.

“The BJP's bill on cow slaughter proposes action such as arrest of people in case beef is found in their houses. These are methods they derive to target a particular community. What is the need of a separate law when a cow slaughter law is already in place. The Supreme Court has already said that cows which are productive enough in terms of milk and farming, cannot be slaughtered and has specified an age after which they can be sold. As citizens of the country, we have to follow the guidelines of the Supreme Court. Besides, no farmer will sell his cow when it is productive and giving milk”, Mr. Ugrappa opined.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
