In 2004, when Mr Rai lost the elections, he was an unemployed leader and at this point of time, the party thought it appropriate to engage Mr Rai in some party work at least. Thus came the district Congress Committee president's post. Questions with regard to the yardstick on which Mr Rai was given the post were raised from various quarters.

In 2008 elections, Mr Rai was re-elected to the Assembly and there were news that Mr Rai will step down from the post. But, proving all rumours wrong, he remained in the post. Even attempts of some aspirants to make him quit did not succeed. This time, it seems as though the time has come for Mr Rai to bid adieu to the DCC Chief's post. Now, most of the people are waiting to see what stand Mr Rai will take with regard to his successor.

Everyone in the Congress circles know it well that Mr Rai will never allow his opponents to dictate terms in the Congress circle. Hence, whoever comes to hold the key position of the district Congress will invariably be Mr Rai's candidate, without any doubt and Ibrahim Kodijal,, Ivan D'Souza, Vijaykumar Shetty are some of the people considered to be close to Mr Rai.

While two Muslim community members have made it to the Assembly from the district, giving another post to a candidate from Muslim candidate is quite unlikely. Hence the chances are bring for Ivan D'Souza and Vijaykumar Shetty.

Further, Ivan D'Souza holds a position in the KPCC. With this, the name of Vijay Kumar Shetty, is being heard prominently for the position. It is said that Mr Shetty had shown his loyalty to the party by campaigning for Mr Moideen Bav keeping aside his disappointment of being denied ticket. Hence party insiders say that the party leadership will hand over the charge to Mr Shetty and rehabilitate him.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
