Kannada translation of Qur'an released in Dubai

Dubai, May 16: Under the patronage of the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities, Government of Dubai, the third edition of the “Translation of the Noble Qur'an in Kannada” by noted media personality Abdus Salaam Puthige was launched here at the Movenpick Hotel.Indian Ambassador to UAE H.E.M.K. Lokesh along with Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Assistant Director Dr Omar Mohammed Al Khateeb, officially released the book.

Kannadigas from all religious backgrounds were present at the event. The key objective of the event was to disseminate the message of the Qur'an, which originally is in the Arabic language, to the millions of Kannadigas who may want to understand the Qur'an's message in their own language in simple words.

In his keynote address, Abdus Salaam Puthige said that the book will not only highlight the various teachings of the Quran, including the message of the Oneness of God but will also help in eliminating various misconceptions that has been attached to this religion in recent times.

Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Assistant Director Dr Omar Muhammed Al-Khateeb said that it was the responsibility of every Muslim to provide the Quranic message to the entire world.

During his talk, H.E. M.K. Lokesh said that it was indeed a happy moment for him to witness the launch of the translation of the Qur'an in his very own mother tongue. He said India is a land of religions and that Muslims have played a vital role over the years in making India the country that we know today.

A slide show highlighting key messages of Islam and a video showing clippings of launch events of earlier editions of the book in Udupi and Mangalore were also presented during the event. The video included the views of the Dharmadhikari of Sri Manjunateshwara Temple in Dharmasthala, Dr.Veerendra Hegde, who said that this book provided the Kannada reader with a clear understanding of the Qur'an in very simple words and explanations.

Parish Priest and Dean of the Immaculate Conception Church in Kinnigoli, Mangalore, Rev. Father Alfred John Pinto highlighted on the common message of all major religions. Mr.Shodhan Prasad from Namma Tuluveru, gave his speech in the Tulu language.

Talks were also presented by other guests including Mr.Shareef from Khushi Group of companies, Mr. Harman Louis, Mr. Ganesh Rai from Sharjah Karnataka Sangha, Mr.Sadan Das – President of Kannada Koota in Dubai, Mr.SatishPoojary – President of Sharjah Karnataka Sangha.

Mr.Abdus Salaam Puthige was presented a memento by the Alumni in Dubai of the SDM Law college in Mangalore and also by Mr. Mohan from Friends of India, a social organization in Dubai.

Mr. Syed Khalil presented the Concluding speech wherein he further stressed that human kind originated from a single father and mother and that all of mankind were brothers and sisters. He encouraged the audience to Kannada translation of the Quran to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of this major religion of the world.

Participants opined through the feedback forms that they got a good opportunity to know what is in the great holy book of quran and they were unable to know earlier due to the language barrier. They all thanked organisers for providing such a opportunity.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
