The managing committee of Muhiyuddin Juma Masjid, Katipalla also extending complete support to the miscreants, said a female member of the family of Abdul Salam, who had sustained severe injuries during the assault.

“We had approached police expecting justice. FIR also has been registered. However, now we feel that police has decided not to take any action against the culprits thanks to the money power of the management committee of the Masjid,” she said.

“Masjid managing committee President Saleem Rafi and Khatheeb Sharief Baqavi and local Corporator Basheer Ahmed too have been informed about the incident. However none of them have visited the injured so far,” she added.

Assailants hospitalized

She said that after coming to know that victim has lodged a police complaint following Wednesday morning's attack, nine assailants had got admitted to Government Wenlock Hospital in the city probably on the instructions of Masjid committee. However, when they came to know that Abdul Salam had mentioned the names of only two accused among them, seven of them got discharged immediately and only two accused continued to be in the hospital, she said.

Even though police was informed about one of the accused attending a marriage party, they did not take any steps to nab him, she alleged.

Unprovoked attack

According to Abdul Salam there was no argument between him and the assailants preceding the attack. He was distributing newspapers on Wednesday morning too. When his motorbike reached Shamsuddin Circle (Main Circle) at second block, Katipalla, at around 4:45 a.m. a group of people were tying bunting to decorate the street ahead of the inauguration of the renovated building of Muhiyuddin Juma Masjid managed by Panambur Muslim Jamath.

Unexpectedly, a part of the decoration strip was lying on the road and it got stuck with the motorcycle that Abdul Salam was riding.

He asked the group not to keep buntings by the roadside and not cause obstruction to motorists. As Abdul Salam left the place, the group chased and assaulted him in his house.

Social Activist

Muneer Katipalla, the state vice president of Democratic Youth Federation of India, said that Abdul Salam was a good social activist and he always raised voice for the poor and the downtrodden section in Muslim community. He never indulged in any anti-social activities, he said.

“It seems that the miscreants might have assaulted him only because of the fact that he was associated with Jamiat Ahle Hadees, an organization, which strongly opposes priesthood in Muslim society,” he said.

45-year-old Abdul Salam also owns a periodical and actively participates in religious activities of Jamiat Ahle Hadees in his area, sources said.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
