Mangalore, May 21: Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment B Ramanath Rai is keen on making the Forest Department a transparent and anti-corrupt one, in the interest of safeguarding the environment and conservation of forests.

During a press conference held at Circuit House here on Tuesday, he said that his vision was to make the department people-friendly and to address all the problems faced by it. “We face the problem of shortage of drinking water in our district. To counter this, a series of dams will be built on West-flowing rivers to supply drinking water to people in regions facing this problem,” he said.

His priority would be to safeguard the ecological balance in nature, mainly that of the rivers born in the Western Ghats. Efforts will be made to bring a reduction in the air pollution taking place, proper utilization of drinking water and enlarging the forest cover in the state. Various problems in the district such as the problem of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and other environmental problems will be identified and steps will be taken to solve them, said the minister.

Afforestation should be done in abundance to increase the forest cover. Effective and honest work needs to be done, said Mr Rai, adding that he would work towards this goal.

“My stand on the issue of diversion of Nethravati river will remain the same, as my opinion is that the level of water in the river may recede if the diversion takes place,” he said.

To a query, he said that a committee had been formed to look into the problems of CRZ and steps would be taken to solve it after studying the feasibility report.
