Mangalore, May 28: They say alcohol makes one forget the world. However, this gang of men in an inebriated condition forgot the world to the extent that they could not identify Khakhi, lathi and boots and ironically ended up beating up two Head Constables in Bunder police station limits. The incident took place late on Sunday night and victims, Damodar (54) and Eshwara Swamy (48) are undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital.

It is said that local residents had called the control room to inform about a chaos that had broke out at Alake market near Kudroli after a group of drunken youth got into an altercation. According to the orders from higher up, Damodar and Eshwar Swamy, two head constables had rushed to the spot to disperse the group. However, the group turned on the two cops, snatched away their lathi and beat them up black and blue.

“It was around 1.15 am that we reached the spot where over five young men were fighting each other. When I questioned them as to what they were doing there at that point of time, the raged group jumped on me asking why I was interfering in their matters. When I said that the locals are complaining against them, they snatched my lathi and all of them came together to hit me,” said Damodar, adding that when his colleague Eshwar came to his rescue they beat him up too. The duo has suffered injuries on back and shoulders.

When Eshwar managed to inform the control room, the group ran away leaving Damodar on the spot.

No respect, no fear

After the shameful incident, duo is wondering if there exists any fear for uniform and respect for the same. “ I joined the service 22-years-ago and Damodar joined 28-years-ago. All these years we have never faced this kind of situation. We were in uniform, yet the youth did not respect the same. They were all well-built young men whom the two of us could not fight, says Eshwar Swamy recalling the incident.

He adds that the group was addressing one person as a corporator, however, he has no clue of his identity, but, if shown they can surely identify the man.

“I managed to escape the beating and I ran some distance. Some people in a nearby apartment were watching the episode. I pleaded them to call the control room and inform about the same. They did it and hence we survived the thrashings,” said Eshwar adding that the instruction on Damodar's walkie-talkie from Control room directing all police present at the stations to rush to Alake, frightened the group.

Both the victims have been calling this as the bitter experience in their career. ACP Kavitha, Bunder SI Ramakrishna have visited the duo and collected details.

A case has been registered at Bunder Station. The police have got clue of the group and SI Ramakrishna has said that the gang will be behind the bars soon.
