As part of the programme, a demonstration of milking of cows by cattle owners was given to children. Primary students of Sacred Heart School in Kulshekar and Canara School participated in the demonstration.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, District Health Officer Dr O R Srirangappa said that timely vaccination for pet animals such as cattle was important in order to avoid transmission of diseases from animals to humans. Diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, leptospirosis (rat fever) and others may be transmitted to humans through animals and vaccines are a way to avoid being infected. Milk producers and dairy farmers should ensure cleanliness.
In his presidential speech, president of the union Raviraj Hegde said that having previously ranked 14th, India now ranked first in the production of milk, adding that 17 per cent of the world's milk was supplied by India. “The Union supplies about 3,30,000 litres of milk to over 2 lakh customers on an average, after pasteurising it. About 47,000 dairy farmers supply milk to the Union,” he said.
In his introductory remarks, Managing Director of the Union Dr B V Sathyanarayana said that the occasion provided an opportunity to focus attention on milk and to publicise activities connected with milk and the milk industry.
A total of 23 dealers in Nandini milk products in the district were felicitated on the occasion, along with six milk producers. Among them were Lata Rao from Puttur taluk, who sold over 560 litres of milk each day, Leeka Fernandes from Punjalkatte, Mukund Kamath, proprietor of Ideal Ice Creams, and Janatha Parlour, Mangalore. Each of them was given prizes along with certificates.
Corporator of Mangalore City Corporation Bhaskar K and former director of Mangalore International Airport M R Vasudeva spoke on the occasion.
Members of the executive committee K Diwakar Shetty, K Seetharam Rai, Dr K M Krishna Bhat, S B Jayaram Rai, K P Sucharita Shetty and H Mukund Nayak were present.
