Mangalore, Jun 6: In two separate cases thieves who approached their targets in guise of police managed to rob ornaments worth Rs 2.9 lakh. Cases have been registered at Bunder and Barker police station.
Lalitha is a teacher in Government Pre University College Car Street. Like everyday Lalitha came from Konaje and got down at Milagres stop and walked her way to the college. As she stepped the gate of the college, a man dressed in police uniform approached her and said, 'Sir has summoned you outside.'
Without second thought, Lalitha went out to see the so called officer, who conversed to her in English and told her that she is not supposed to wear gold ornaments. When Lalitha replied that she would take off the gold in the office room, the police offered her an envelope and even dropped the envelope with ornaments in her bag. However, when Lalitha reached the office room and searched for the envelope, it was not to be seen in the bag. She rushed to the gate, only to see that the men had disappeared.
She has registered a case with Bunder police for losing 110 gm gold.
Another in 10 mins
Within ten minutes of Lalitha's incident, another case of robbery took place near Ballalbaugh. Umesh Pai from Bokkapatna had come to an ATM in the MCC building to withdraw cash to pay his water bills.
Meanwhile a man stopped him and told him that a baby was killed in the vicinity and gold snatchers' groups are roaming in open looking for easy targets. Introducing himself as a policeman along with two others, the man suggested to Mr Pai to remove all his gold and keep it safe.
Following their suggesting Mr Pai removed his gold chain and ring. The strangers in police uniform had offered him anenvelop, which they had dropped into his bag. However, later on when Mr Pai looked for the envelop, it was not there. A case has been registered with Barke police station. Mr Pai lost 35 gms of gold.
