Delivering the main address on the occasion, Abdussalam Puthige, Editor-in-chief, Vartha Bharathi Kannada daily, urged the newly elected people's representatives to always keep the people's interest in mind and not fall prey to the temptations of power and the arrogance that comes along with it. The incumbent position holders must have an eye on their 'former' counterparts and remember that power and position are never permanent. “A good leader is one who will be remembered and respected by people even after decades of him stepping down from the position”, he said, and advocated them to punctuate their term with sacrifices and pro-people achievements. The least people expect from their leaders today is non-involvement in corruption, illegal and anti-social activities and betrayal of the faith they reposed in them, he added.
B Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests and Environment, expressed gratitude to the people of his constituency on the occasion, for electing him as their MLA for a record sixth time. “I have this personal satisfaction that I enjoy the support of people from all sections of the society and not just from my caste, or else I would not have made it to the Assembly six times. I have this satisfaction that I never indulged in politics of religion. Those who did so, have been taught a lesson by the people. The minorities especially have voted with wisdom and have kept fundamentalist forces at bay”, Mr. Rai said.
Stating that those blessed with financial might in the society must help those in need, Mr. Rai expressed his appreciation for the efforts Jam'iyathul Falah has been putting in over the years in this regard.
Moideen Bawa, MLA, Mangalore North, sharing his thoughts, said that not many people had given him a chance prior to the elections. “But I held on and today, by the grace of God, I have won in a constituency that has historically been sensitive. I am extremely glad that people voted for harmony and will never forget this faith they have shown in me till my last breath”, he said.
J R Lobo, MLA, Mangalore South, said that he is grateful to have been given an opportunity by the people and assured that he will give his best in fulfilling his responsibilities. “After 20 years, a Congress candidate won from this constituency. People have shown faith in us this time and we will not disappoint them”, he said.
Besides Mr. Rai, Mr. Lobo and Mr. Bawa, MCC Councilors Abdul Azeez, Abdul Rauf, Abdul Lateef, Zubaida, Sumayya, Rameeza Banu and Naveen D'Souza were also felicitated on the occasion by the organization.
Khaleel Ahmed, President, JF, DK and Udupi, Shahul Hameed, Secretary, Zameer Ahmed, Secretary, Saaduddin Salih and other members of Jam'yathul Falah were present.
