Mangalore, Jun 13: Education system in the state is still confined to marks and percentages while the competitive world outside has grown beyond academic numbers, said Fr Alwyn Serrai, Principal, Rosario College Cathedral, Mangalore.

He was speaking after inaugurating an educational conference and felicitation ceremony for merit students of SSLC-2013 and heads of institutions with cent percent results organized by the Mangalore City High School Headmasters' and Pre-University College Principals' Association in Mangalore on Wednesday.

Lamenting that education system continues to remain numbers oriented, Fr. Serrao said that there is a need to bring in other aspects of personality development in schooling as well. “At the moment, our examination system only tests the memory power and to an extent the reasoning power of students. The world outside has moved beyond IQ and aspects such as EQ (Emotional Quotient) and even Social and Spiritual Quotients (SQ). Learning of skills and behaviour must be given equal importance as academics. We have seen in the past that some terrorists were found to be doctors and engineers who scored good marks,” he opined.

Stressing on the need to do away with the notion of judging schools by their result percentages and the number of distinctions and first classes they get, Fr Serrao urged people and education department officials alike to also consider the effort schools put in to improve standards internally.

“We don't have any system in place to ascertain the effort schools put in to improve the standard of students coming to them from other institutions. No one looks at the improvement in marks scored by a student studying in a school after having come from another institution with low marks but everyone wants to look at the overall percentage of the school”, he said.

Fr. Serrao further pointed out that while there are RTE activists, RTI activists, student associations, government officials looking into school functioning etc, no group or section of activists dedicate time and energy to protect and address teachers' rights.

Dr. Ismail, Principal of Badria College, Mangalore, and member of the executive committee of the Association, in his introductory address brought to the notice of Moses Jayashekhar, DDPI, DK, the problem of excessive training programmes for teachers being held by the Department due to which running classes in schools in the last academic year has been difficult due to shortage of teachers. There is lack of coordination between certain offices of the Department and the schools which needs to be addressed, he said.

Mr. Jayashekhar, who presided over the programme, said that since new BEOs have taken charge and reports of lack of coordination are being received by the Department, a meeting involving all officials and stake holders from the Department as well as schools will be called soon. Since the district had a disappointing SSLC result this time, steps to improve results during this academic year will also be discussed in the meeting, he said.

The DDPI used the platform to convey to school heads, teachers, students and parents to create dengue and malaria awareness in school assemblies, through jathas and other means about maintaining cleanliness in surroundings of schools and houses.

Fr Lawrence D'Souza, Outgoing Secretary and Former Principal, Rosario College, was felicitated by the Association on the occasion along with head-teachers of schools coming under the Association who retired this year. Student toppers of different schools were also feted besides schools obtaining 100% result.

Aloysius D'Souza, President of the Association, was present.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
