Mangalore, Jun 13: Officers of the department of customs seized gold jewellery weighing 157 grams valued at Rs 3.36 lakh from a passenger at Mangalore International Airport (MIA), Kenjar here on Tuesday.

The accused, Shabab Mattummal, a resident of Kolavayal in Kasargod, arrived at MIA by Air India Express flight IX 384 from Dubai at 6.30pm.
He had concealed the jewellery in a thermos flask.
Officials on doubt inspected the luggage brought by Shabab and found that the gold jewellery was cleverly wrapped in white paper and bound using adhesive tape and then placed at the bottom of the flask to avoid the same showing up on scanning machines.
Observing that gold normally shows up on scanning machines, officials said smugglers resort to newer ideas to conceal gold. Further investigation is on.
