Mangalore, Jun 14: A theft has been reported at the Office of the Head Quarters of Sub-Registrar and Registrar of Marriage located in the premises of District Commissioner's office in Mangalore.
The theft was discovered this morning when the officials arrived for work.
According to the Sub-registrar, the side-gate of the office had been opened to gain entry into the office.
He said that the police was immediately informed, who arrived at the spot and began their investigation. Having been told by the police not to touch any contents of the office, he told few reporters that it could not be confirmed what was missing until they went through all the documents.
“Once the police finish their investigation, we have to sort out through everything to determine what is missing or stolen,” he said.
However, if other official sources are to be believed, a sum of 65,000 was allegedly taken from the office. One official said that there were invaluable records stored in the office, without any copies or computerised back-up. There was a single security guard on duty at night for the entire premises.
Forensic and fingerprint experts arrived at the spot and conducted investigation. Pandeshwar police are investigating the theft.
Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo visited the office and said that forensic experts had begun their work, and assured that the culprits would be nabbed soon.
Speaking to mediapersons, he said that provisions should be made to increase security at night. “Every government office should have a night watchman since they housed invaluable official records. There is no proper record room to store the official records. I will bring the matter to the government's attention," he said.
The registration of certificates scheduled for the day was postponed till tomorrow.
