Mangalore, Jun 14: A comprehensive plan for Surathkal market and other city infrastructure will be formed following a meeting with all stakeholders of the region and in the presence of Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development on June 17, Moideen Bava, MLA, Mangalore North, has said.

Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Friday, Mr. Bava said that at the moment the entire Surathkal region is dotted by unscientific and scattered infrastructure with incomplete road works and other projects acting as a hindrance.

Shedding more light on the proposed renovation of Surathkal market, the MLA said that the project is one of his top priorities and will urge the Minister to take it up through the Government's Housing Board or on a PPP basis. Arrangements to be made to shift the existing traders and sellers at the market will also be discussed in the meeting, he said.

“Development of Surathkal was part of my assurances made prior to elections. We had promised that we will revamp the Surathkal market, create proper parking facilities, set up bus stands and put other city related infrastructure in place. A meeting in this regard will be held at Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal on Monday in the presence of Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development, B Ramanath Rai, District in-charge Minister, Deputy Commissioner of the district, Commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), elected representatives of local bodies and also other stakeholders such as shop owners, auto rickshaw drivers, representatives of car drivers' association, tourist vehicle owners and the like. Following an inspection of the city's existing infrastructure and problems by the Minister, formation of a comprehensive plan for the city's development will be discussed at the meeting”, Mr. Bava said.

Road

Speaking on some other issues of his constituency currently on his radar, Mr. Bawa said that widening of the service road in Surathkal is one of the key issues he is looking to address. The road is currently too narrow and a discussion will be held with the engineers concerned to find a solution to the problem. Cleanliness along the Gurpura-Kaikamba stretch will be looked into and laying interlock in the area will be initiated soon. There is an urgent need of a fire service centre in Surathkal as there is considerable delay in the arrival of emergency services from Mangalore whenever there are fire mishaps in the area and the same will be taken up.

Health care

Upgrade of Surathkal's primary health centre has already been discussed with U T Khader, State Health Minister, and the problem of a common 108 ambulance service for both Surathkal and Bajpe areas has been brought to his notice. Revamping of the Surathkal Smashana (cremation ground) is also on his list of to-do activities, the MLA said.

Betterment Committee

A committee by name 'Surathkal Betterment Committee' headed by him and comprising of various stakeholders including elected representatives, political leaders cutting across party lines, doctors, engineers, former principals of the region, market representatives, representatives of taxi and tourist vehicle owners etc will be formed to scan and discuss the problems plaguing the constituency in terms of infrastructure, he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
