Mangalore, Jun 16: Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, health minister U T Khader, fisheries minister Abhayachandra Jain, and MLAs J R Lobo and Moideen Bava were felicitated in a programme organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in the city on Saturday.

A document titled 'IT Vision – 2020' compiled by the people of Mangalore working in the IT sector was released on the occasion by Ramanath Rai.

In the presence of the ministers and MLAs, KCCI president Mohammed Ameen presented proposals for as many as 23 various development projects in the undivided DK district and submitted a memorandum of the proposal to Mr Rai.

Proposals such as a high-speed rail link between Konaje and Manipal, upgradation of Mangalore railway station, doubling of Konkan railway tracks, development of government hospitals and affordable housing schemes for industrial workers with basic amenities were discussed during the programme.

Addressing the gathering later, Mr Rai said that the land acquisition process for the construction of four-lane project linking Mangalore-Bangalore had begun.

He said that the development of the Mangalore-Shimoga road had been handed over to the National Highway Authority of India to improve connectivity to Mangalore. He also said that a committee comprising of senior officers would be formed to review plans to develop beach tourism in the twin districts, following which a report would be compiled and submitted to the central government.

Owing to the fact that DK contributed a majority of sportspersons in the country, the minister said that the government would also give importance to the establishment of a sports complex of international standards in Mangalore.

Health minister U T Khader said that an amount of Rs 5 crore had been sanctioned by the government to set-up a mini-fishing harbour at Ullal.

“Priority should be given to keep the twin districts clean and beautiful by implementing proper solid waste management. It does not require much money to maintain cleanliness in the coastal districts,” he said.

Mr J R Lobo said that Mangalore had all the characteristics of becoming the second best city in the state. “We have to work together to undertake several developmental projects and progress towards this goal. We will see to it that Mangalore will be developed beyond our thoughts,” he said.

Moideen Bava also spoke about the need to undertake several projects in the district.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
