CFI demands Governor to prevent custodial violence

Mangalore, Jun 29: Campus Front of India has demanded the Governor of Karnataka to take immediate steps to prevent torture/custodial deaths and make the police officers in charge of stations and their higher ups accountable for every case of violence in custody. In such cases the officials must be held liable and should be punished if found guilty.

The organization has submitted a memorandum to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

The organization has also demanded to set up Fast Track Courts for speedy disposal of the cases pertaining to ones arrested in terror cases.

Interrogation / questioning of the accused to be done in full transparency under CCTV surveillance with recording, lifetime compensation to be given to innocent victim with honor or a job in government and Independent National and the State Human Rights Commissions to be set up with full authority to inquire into reported cases of torture were some of the other demands.

The organization has cited that from 2001 to 2010, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recorded 14,231 i.e. 4.33 persons died in police and judicial custody in India. This includes 1,504 deaths in police custody and 12,727 deaths in judicial due to torture; this inhuman act is practiced from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gujarat to west Bengal and in total India.

CFI had recently organized 5 days state wide anti-torture campaign.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
