25-year-old woman given wrong blood in hospital, dies

Bangalore, July 5: A 25-year-old woman, suffering from anaemia for the past four years, died at a private hospital here on Thursday after, she was allegedly transfused wrong blood at K C General Hospital last Saturday.

The victim, Rajeshwari (25), used to work at a garments factory, but was forced to quit after her health deteriorated.

Rajeshwari's family said she was admitted to KC General Hospital for blood transfusion on Saturday. Her blood group was O positive, but she was given B positive blood, causing grave complications, they alleged.

Rajeshwari herself pointed out to her relatives that she was being given blood of a wrong group. "She saw a bottle which had B+ written on it, and raised an alarm. But the nursing staff tried to pacify her, saying the sticker was wrong and it was fine," said Jayalakshmi, Rajeshwari's elder sister.

Nurse Bhagyalakshmi, who was handling the blood bottles, tried to tell the family members all was well. But they would have none of it and took up the matter with hospital authorities. The patient immediately developed complications like vomiting, dysentery and diarrhea.

Rajeshwari developed complications like nausea and diarrhoea. K C General Hospital staff failed to revive her. The family then shifted her to a private hospital on Tuesday.

She was shifted to Victoria Hospital on Wednesday morning, where she died in the early hours of Thursday.

Acting on a complaint from Rajeshwari's family, Malleswaram police booked cases against Dr Suresh, a physician, nurse Bhagyalakshmi and two other employees of the government-run KC General Hospital.

Post-Sabarimala pilgrimage drinking party turns fatal in Udupi; youth killed in midnight brawl

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
