The theft came to light early on Saturday morning when one of the office bearers of the Basadi opened the front door.

It is suspected that the thieves might have gained entry into the temple by breaking open the back windows with the help of a gas cutter.

They also managed to cut off the CCTV camera connection.

Moodbidri town police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.

Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Swamiji, the chief pontiff of the Jain mutt, is currently on a US tour to attend a religious convention. It is suspected that the thieves might have committed the crime taking advantage of the pontiff's absence.
