Mangalore, Jul 9: Undergoing blood pressure and diabetic screening might become compulsory for every individual above the age of 30 years in Karnataka.
Speaking after inaugurating the new building of Primary Health Centre (PHC), built at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore, at Kudupu, Vamanjoor on the outskirts of Mangalore, Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader said that amidst increasing number of BP and diabetic cases reported in the state, the health department is planning to introduce a new scheme for the well-being of people.
This includes compulsory BP and diabetic screening for every individual above the age of 30 years, he said.
Admitting that people have lost trust on PHC, Mr Khader said that there is a need to regain the trust of the people through better service.
More than the building, it is important for doctors to show genuine concern towards patients and to ensure hygiene at PHCs. A patient gives more importance to the concern and affection by the doctor than to medicines. “The patient is the ambassador of the PHC,” he said.
Mr Khader said cancer detection machines too will be introduced in every district hospital across Karnataka.
He said efforts will be made to change the current ratio of one 108 ambulance service for 50,000 people. To monitor the functioning of government hospitals, panchayat members will be trained to inspect the health centres and hospitals, he said.
He said staff in hospitals will be trained periodically to keep the hospitals clean. Of the 4,000 vacancies in Group D in the state, 2,600 have been filled. The government is keen on hiring doctors on contract basis by paying Rs 30,000 to fresh MBBS graduates, Rs 60,000 to those who have completed PG and Rs 80,000 for PGs who work in North Karnataka region.
There are 1,000 transfers sought by people working as staff members in various government hospitals on the ground that they have relatives who are not well, which is difficult to believe, he said.
Mr Khader also said that the new building of Lady Goschen Hospital, which is currently under way, will have radiotherapy and chemotherapy units to treat cancer patients.
