Engineering graduate electrocuted to death; locals protest against Mescom, assault official

Bantwal, Jul 10: A youth died of electrocution at Farangipete in Bantwal, early on Wednesday morning after coming in contact with a high-tension wire lying on the ground.

The raged local residents say that the death could have been averted if the Mescom officials had been considerate enough to pay heed to their complaint with regard to a hanging wire that had been posing threat since several days.

The deceased is Milan Shetty alias Manoj (22), son of Pudu Gram Panchayat member Vasanthi. Milan had venture out to take the cattle for grazing when the incident occurred.

Milan, an engineering graduate was awaiting job after having attended an interview for a reputed company in Bangalore. Milan's father Ramesh Shetty works in Mumbai.

Ire against Mescom

Death of Milan has put Mescom in trouble as people are expressing their anger against the passiveness of the Company. The local residents had time and again complained about the precariously hanging wire. The Mescom paid no attention to the complaints and the same wire claimed a young man's life on Wednesday.

It is said that the incident occurred at about 6.15 am and when the Mescom officials visited the spot it was about 8 am. Raged villagers assaulted the JE of Mescom. Police had to intervene to control the situation. Hanging electric lines have been a problem in this area and couple of months ago a cattle was electrocuted.

Case has been registered at Bantwal rural police station.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
