Mangalore, Jul 13: Four women from West Bengal, who had been lifting ornaments from jewellery showrooms in different cities including Mangalore were nabbed by the police from Kochi in Kerala.
The gang had escaped with ornaments worth lakhs of rupees from 'Sulthan Gold' and 'Tanishq' in Mangalore after gaining entry into the jewellery showrooms in the guise of rich customers recently.
The gang works with the same modus operandi. They first enter the showroom as customers and then confuse the salesmen by asking them to show as much patterns and designs as possible. In this way the gang manages to pocket some ornaments, without the notice of the salesmen.
However, at Kochi, it was not their day as the sales-men caught them red-handed and handed them over to Kochi central police.
The cops have seized Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and some fake ornaments.
The women had asked the sales-men at Malabar Gold to show them some most expensive ornaments. When the sales-men kept the ornaments in front of them, their behavior fuelled suspicion and the sales-men became alert to keep an eye on the women.
In 2011, the gang had pocketed gold anklet from the same showroom. When the CCTV footage was checked it was established that the same gang had executed the theft in 2011.
Theft worth Crores
The police feel that the women must have robbed ornaments worth crores till date. Malabar Gold Calicut, Alapad Jewellers Ernakulam, Sulthan Gold and Tanishq Mangalore, Reliance Jewellery Bangalore are some of the places the team had executed its plans successfully.
Six months ago two to three women had robbed gold bracelet from Sulthan Gold and two diamond bangles from Tanishq, all estimated to cost Rs 8 lakhs.
At Kochi too the women who posed themselves as rich women, spoke to the sales-men in English and convinced the salesmen through their behavior that they are potential buyers of ornaments.
