Bantwal, Jul 14: The mother and wife of a man who brutally assaulted and injured the two women on Friday night before committing suicide, are currently recuperating at a private hospital in Mangalore and their conditions have slightly improved.

After being assaulted by Abdul Hameed, said to be mentally unstable, the conditions of his mother Mariamma (58) and wife Asma (28) are said to be stable and are recovering in the hospital.

The duo suffered severe injuries on the head, back of their heads, arms and shoulders from a butcher's knife yielded by Hameed, and had been battling for their lives since the attack.

After the unprovoked brutal attack on the two women, Hameed then locked himself in a room and hung himself by a saree on Friday night, when the other male members of the house had been to offer special Ramadan prayers.

Hameed had been employed in a super-market in Mangalore, and had complained of sharp pain in his chest on Friday afternoon, following which he began behaving like a mentally unstable person. Informed about the same, his brother Abdul Khader arrived at Mangalore and took him to a hospital, before returning to their home at Kodaje-Panthadka of Bantwal taluk, when the assault took place.

At night, when Mariamma sought Hameed in the house to counsel him about his behaviour, he began assaulting her with the knife without provocation, and proceeded to assault his wife, before committing suicide.

Hearing their cries, the locals arrived and rushed them to a local hospital.

District Assistant Superintendent of Police Shivakumar, Bantwal Circle Inspector Anil S Kulkarni, Vittla police station inspector Madhava Kudlu visited the spot and the hospital and conducted investigation.

Condolence

Zilla panchayat member M S Mohammed, KPCC labourer wing state secretary Haneef Baggumoole, gram panchayat member Abbas N and Shridhar Rai visited the hospital and offered their condolences.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
