Mary D'Souza (69) has been living alone in her house at Saripalla. On Sunday at about 8 pm, Nagesh (24) from Chikkaballapur knocked at her door addressing her 'Ajji' (grandmother).

When Mary opened the door, Nagesh threatened her showing a knife and led her to the bedroom. He locked her up in the bedroom after undressing her and then went on looting the house. He took away Rs 5,000 in cash and several valuables from the house, For an hour or so he roamed in the house picking valuables from every room. Finally he ventured into the bedroom and raped Mary.

Mary's house is in an isolated location. Further rains added to the misery of Mary as her cry for help reached none.

Unfortunately, though Mary's children live close by, in separate houses, she would convey the message of the disaster only after the thief left the house.

Mangalore Rural Police, who rushed to the spot immediately, nabbed Nagesh who was found loitering near Saripalla.

Nagesh, a construction worker has confessed to the crime. It is said that he has been doing minor robbery. The incident has instilled fear in locals.
