Four drug peddlers nabbed in Padubidri

Udupi, Jul 18: Drug menace is a biggest threat to the youngsters. While a popular belief is that the invisible hands of drug traffickers is functioning in the cities, an incident of four men being nabbed by police in a small village like Padubidri in Udupi district has brought to light as to how drug menace has spread its tentacles.

Shishir Suvarna (20), Zainuddin (39) from Kasba-Bengre, Mangalore, Haneef alias Rajesh (19) from Kanchinadka, and Mohomad Ashfaq (20) from Palimar have been arrested by Padubidri police with 460 gms of Ganja, from Padubidri on Wednesday.

The group has been functioning from a bar and restaurant in 'Kelaginapete' area and on reliable information, the police nabbed Shishir Suvarna. On the basis of information gathered from him, three of his aides were nabbed later.

Four mobile phones and 30 empty sachets too have been confiscated from them.

While Shishir is employed in the same hotel from where he was nabbed, Haneef and Ashfaq work as building painters. Zainuddin, the oldest in the group is a worker at the Mangalore Wharf but had been distributing Ganja on demand to several small areas like Padubidri. There are several cases booked against Zainuddin. He lives in a small house with his wife and four kids, in Mangalore amidst acute poverty.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
