21 Malekudiyas to be inducted into Home Guards soon

Mangalore, Jul 19: The Department of Home Guards will deploy 21 selected Malekudiyas for a year beginning from August 1st, said Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal.

Announcing this at a press conference at his office here on Friday, he said that once the department would get an affirmation from the Director General of Home Guards, the scheme would be implemented. The selected 21 will be given one-month training in traffic management after which they will be deployed on traffic duty, he said, adding that a sum of Rs 19.5 lakhs had been sanctioned by the Deputy Commissioner for the scheme.

A sum of Rs 10 lakhs has been released for a period of six months for the 21 Malekudiyas who will be paid Rs 250 per day as salary. An order has been given for the release of the remaining amount. This sum will be handed over to the commandant of home guards, he said.

Mr Goyal said that inducting the selected Malekudiyas into home guard department would help in bridging the gap between the police and tribals. “They will help in police matters which will help ease our workload, since there is shortage of personnel in the police department,” he said, adding that DK had the worst police to population ratio with only 13 police stations in the district, while Udupi and Chikmagalur districts had 24 and 29 respectively.

He said that the 21 members were chosen by the police department as per home guard selection. A majority of them are from Belthangady, while others are from Sullia and Kadaba regions, he said.

Post-Sabarimala pilgrimage drinking party turns fatal in Udupi; youth killed in midnight brawl

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
